The National Bank first opened in 1920 in leased premises in Waipu.
A modest single storey building was then built on the corner of Cove Road and Nova Scotia Drive in 1924. The Bank became an official branch in 1936 and an attached residence was built in 1937 for the first bank manager Mr C A Peat.
The premises was lit by kerosene lamps and heated with three open fires before electricity was connected in 1938.

The building was listed with Heritage New Zealand as a Category Two Historic Landmark in 1984.
The National Bank in Waipu reverted to an agency of the Whangarei branch in 1988. The building was sold and subsequently used as a medical centre and private home.

This growing Northland coastal town has a wealth of pioneering history and  heritage.
The building (originally The National Bank) was established in 1924 and sits on the corner of Nova Scotia Drive and Cove Road. A long-admired landmark in the heart of town, the building recently underwent an extensive renovation and has re-opened as an exciting new commercial hub.

In 2021 the building was purchased privately and completely restored.
All floors were stripped of lino, old carpet and tiles and returned to original rimu. The impressive entry stairwell was hand-sanded and polished with Danish oil.
Timber joinery was replaced or painstakingly restored removing multiple layers of paint. The building’s interior and exterior paintwork was selected with careful consideration to heritage. The original vault was restored to become a stunning highlight of the building.
